Ohiovid of the day: The James Gang

Before the Eagles, there was the James Gang, from Cleveland. Featuring guitarist Joe Walsh, the band made a splash in the early 70's with a bit of funk, some rock, and a tight sound. Here's one of their hits, Walk Away, from a 1971 video.

Ohiovid of the day: The Ohio Express

We've been posting videos of some of Ohio's brightest music stars. Today we peek at the ugly underbelly of the Ohio music scene, one of the bands that caused our state to be roundly cursed. It was, after all, The Ohio Express that brought us that most odious of bubblegum anthems, "Yummy Yummy Yummy (I got love in my tummy)." This video of the group performing "Mercy Mercy" is a hilarious mashup of counterculture appearances and ad-jingle musical style.

Ohiovid of the Day: Canton in the 50's, 60's, 70's

This is where and when I grew up, and this short documentary, "Canton -- A City of Change" brought back so many memories: Myers Lake, the downtown, Lincoln High School. I wouldn't have been surprised to see myself in the picture. I would have been the geeky kid with the Drew Carey glasses.

Ohiovid of the day: speed talking

I was fascinated by this guy's ability to speed talk And remember all this stuff. Ohio is mentioned in here, along with the Ohio presidents.

Ohiovid of the day: Elusive Butterfly

One-hit wonder Bob Lind from Baltimore, Ohio recorded "Elusive Butterfly" back in 1966. This performance was from the television series "Hullabaloo". Lind is introduced by the the Righteous Brothers.

Ohiovid of the Day: true body

Check out what one Cincinnati teen has to say about trying to find balance between self image and what others think of her. This video was inspired by her experience with True Body Project, a program started two summers ago by Ohio novelist, Stacy Sims and owner of Pendleton Pilates to help teenage girls connect with themselves, and stay connected.

Ohiovid of the day: pool poetry

In honor of the upcoming Olympic Trials at OSU, here's a pretty bit of synchronized swimming from the Russia Gala Synchronized Swimming Show 2005.

Ohiovid of the day: Whip it. Whip it good.

A short video of Ohio bullwhip artist Gery L. Deer and his very, very trusting wife Scout. Gery recently appeared on "America's Got Talent." And how.

Ohiovid of the day: Jack Dempsey versus Jess Willard

Boxing in the days of yore was a much more brutal sport. And the Dempsey vs. Willard fights is fairly well known as a bloody battle fought in 1919 in Toledo. I'm not much a boxing guy, but watching Dempsey knock the tar out of his opponent is mesmerizing in an odd way. It's excusable: it's history!

Ohiovid of the day: Annie Oakley

Annie Oakley was raised in southwest Ohio, rural and poor. To bring in food and money she turned to using a rifle. Later on in life she became a celebrity trick shooter, touring with the Buffalo Bill show. Here is a historic piece of footage showing her shooting abilities.

Ohiovid of the day: slam dunk performance at ONU

Ohio Northern University is not too far away from me, I was pretty impressed with this video clip of a dunking show in their gym.

Ohiovid of the day: My city was gone

One of the best Ohio songs EVER! By Akron native Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders, this live version dates back to (I think) the early 80's, a live performance at the California Festival. Note how young she appears.

Ohiovid of the Day: more inglorious Ohio representation

Buckeye State Blog posted this interesting video on Youtube, showing Ohio Representative and House Majority Leader John Boehner of Troy diverting to committee a proposed investigation of sleazeball Representative Mark Foley, the House page predator. As Mark Twain famously said, "Those who love sausage and respect the law should never watch either being made. "

Ohiovid of the Day: end of the summer

I'm stubborn about admitting summer has ended, but as the leaves begin to turn I can no longer deny its passing. For one last reminder of our warm weather fun, sit back and enjoy the finale of the Columbus "Red, White and Boom" Fourth of July fireworks display.

Ohiovid of the day: Ohio's state rock song

I found this performance of the state's official rock song "Hang on the Sloopy" by the original performers, The McCoys. Enjoy, and let that Buckeye pride swell!
